It's about time to replace the original BMW battery in my wife's 2004 530i. Having replaced the battery in my 2000 Z3 with first, a dealer-supplied BMW battery which failed in one year, I ignored any battery warranty and purchased an Autozone Duralast equivalent, which is still going strong in 2009. This was done upon forum recommendation, since the forum felt replacement BMW batteries were not up to original BMW battery standards. So, I'd now like to buy an Autozone Duralast equivalent for the 2004 530i, but I've read that any new battery MUST be registered with the car. Response to an email sent to Roundel confirms this and says I must take the car to the dealership, but failed to answer my questions:
1) What are the consequences of NOT registering a new battery?
2) Can I register the battery myself?
3) How can I replace the battery without losing software memory?
Thanks in advance for knowledgeable answers to the above questions.
