| Message: | I mean, after the X6, they were sort of the embarrassment of German Auto design, not to mention marketing. Releasing an ugly 8 mpg four-wheel-drive "sedan" during a gas crises was not a smart move. Now Porsche has a competing product in that segment. MPG is the new horsepower. Any idiot can make 300, 400, or even 500 HP. Getting 40 mpg. Now that takes Engineering. Funny thing, too. BMWs and Porches were never known in the old days as wildly overpowered cars (quite the contrary) and made up for lack of HP with lighter weight and better handling. Now it seems that the Germans have joined the muscle-car set. Everything they are selling these days is V-8 engines and 300+ HP to start with, with turbos throwing in an extra hundred. What's next? Porsche and BMW in NASCAR? Pickup trucks? You can chase market segments and try to build "me too" products, or you can decide to build something distinctive and let the market come to you. If you want market share, do the former. And this car is clearly a stab at greater market share. What ever happened to the old BMW in-line six and the Porsche Boxer engine? Relegated to the junkyard of history, I guess. Or soon will be. | ||||
