79 911 SC : Plug in Nav System and Speedo dies (56 views) (66 thread views)
Message: Hello, this is my first post on this forum. I've owned my '79 SC for about a year now and just took it on it's first 500 mile trip (with me that is) and something strange happened. I stopped to top off the tank and reset the odometer. A few miles later I noticed the speedometer was reading about 30 mph and the odometer hadn't moved off zero. No problem I thought, I've got a GPS based nav system plugged into the cigar lighter and it displays actual speed. 150 miles later I noticed the nav display is blank. Fiddled with the plug in the cigar lighter, noticed the green power light on the plug wasn't lit so I figured "no power." Unplugged the thing and guess what? Ten seconds later the speedometer begins registering 75 mph and the odo starts turning. Plug the nav system back in and speedo dies again! Unplug it and speedo/odo start working. What's going on?

Leaving the motel the next morning, I notice the headlights, wipers and front parking lamps don't work. Interior lights, tail lamps and brake lights do. Wiggle the headlight switch and everything comes on! Is this something SC's do? Anyone have a suggestion? In three days when I get off work I've got to drive back the 500 miles (in daylight) and would love to know how fast I'm going. The nav system is working, having recharged it at work so at least I can jot down my speed at different RPMs before the battery in the thing dies. Tires on the SC are apparently not original size since the nav system reports ~85 MPH when the speedo says 70 MPH. Any thoughts?
