| Message: | | I've owned both also (still own an M3). Before I owned them, I did the same thing you are doing and debated over which to get. The performance figures (e.g., 0-60 times) are so similar that it's a natural thing to do. However, once you have driven both, you will laugh at yourself for ever making the comparison. As the previous posts have pointed out, the M3 is a sedan and the 911 is a sports car. And, as a previous post wisely pointed out, that can cut both ways. I take my M3 to the track, and it simply cannot keep up with 996s -- How could a sedan possibly compete with a built from the ground up sports car? It can't.
However, believe it or not, overall I prefer the M3. After I got over the thrill of mashing the gas pedal to the floor on my 996 TT, driving a sports car as a daily driver got old quick. Many, many people will not feel that way - it's simply a preference. I miss having a 996, and I am going to get another one soon because I regret selling it. However, I will keep my M3 as my daily driver. And, if I could have only one, it would be the M3. Again, just my preference.
The point here is that answering one question will resolve the decision for you - do you want a sports car, or do you want a fast sedan? I would highly recommend test driving each one before wasting any more time comparing statistics. Since they're so different from one another, I suspect your choice will be clear. Good luck - let us know what you decide to do.
