| Message: | | ...that's all about how petroleum-dependent our agricultural system is, and how it can be made less so by intelligent crop rotation, and other means.
For example, in Argentina, they grow corn on an eight-year cycle. For five years, they grow corn, and for three, they let cattle graze. The cattle and grass fertilize the land so much that no additional petroleum-based fertilizer is needed for the corn, and the three-year gap keeps the pests down, so less pesticide is necessary. Furthermore, grass is better for cattle than corn, and the beef from those cattle is better for you than the beef from corn-fed cattle. Finally, the toxic manure pools from cattle "farms" are avoided, since the manure simply fertilizes the corn.
