Ronald W. Regan.

RWR was considered an outsider and a simplistic troublemaker. It's only because of RWR that there is a Republican Party today.

The machine also hated John McCain, in 2000, mainly because of his stance on campaign reform. So, they pumped up GW.

Ironically, it was a fight over letting all the Republican candidates be heard at a debate back in 1980 that pushed RWR on to the nomination and presidency. Google "I paid for this microphone" and "Ronald Regan" to get the full story.
