| Message: | | DO NOT drive in snow/winter precip with the summer performance tires on. Even if it is for one season only, the $500 price of a 15" steel wheel and winter tire package (from tireack.com) is more than reasonable considering the safety value (consider it insurance - life and auto). Come spring, sell them before you move to AZ - a one season set should fetch at least 50% of the original price.
Also, contrary to some of the suggestions here about putting them on at the first snow fall, I reommend putting them on at the first frost. Summer performance tires have specialized rubber compounds that maximize grip in warmer weather (50+ degrees F). As temps get cooler, the rubber compound reacts by becoming harder with a corresponding reduction in friction coefficient = less grip. Similarly, winter tires have a specialized rubber compound that maximizes grip at colder temps (40deg F or less). Same goes for your A4 quattro - AWD may help you go, but it won't do anything to help you stop.
BTW - All season tires are a poor substitute for dedicated winter & summer tires.
