I'd say that is an accurate statement. I was fortunate to get a "gem" although it's not a GTI. I had reservations about getting the VW and basically told myself "the third time it's in for warranty work, it's next stop will be at an Acura (RSX Type-S) or MINI dealer."

As it turns out, my '03 TDI has been much more reliable than my g/f's '03 MCS, despite having 2x the miles. Since taking delivery nearly 3 years ago, it has never been to the dealer for anything (I do all maintenence myself), whereas the MCS has been in for numerous (although relatively minor) annoyances.
