did it blow black smoke BEFORE the valve job ?

what is the "quick fix" that you speak of ?

and if it were "quick" - how is it that the 'mechanic'
didn't perform it - during the one year period ?

maybe the fuel system is now full of stale gas and it needs draining, and refilling before anymore diagnosis ?

miles on car ?

why was a valve job needed ? (unusual)

you need to post ALL the know history in greater details

nothing is QUICK untill all known repairs and history are known
