89 300te - puffing noise

My 89 300te makes an odd puffing sound like pressure being released somewhere in the area of the rear suspension. If the car idles or is driven it will make this sound repeatedly. One "puff" and it's fine for a while. Car has 120KM (about 70,000 miles) and original spheres. I am guessing it is something to do with the suspension system. Does anyone know about this? thanks
