Re: C240 Power Chip (2695 views)
Message: There are a few other companies who "chip" .... and don't rip you off like Powerchip. As a BMW/Audi/Mercedes owner who has all of them done, the biggest ripoff is chipping. They mark it up as they think you own a BMW/Audi/Mercedes and you "can" afford them. My M3 was done by Dinan for FREE at an event. They like to tell you all about the development costs .... well a programmer said it costs them so little as to be laughable. To track fuel and spark they basically copy the mapping and slightly modify it, a simple affair for a programmer. I've been told at BMW meets that you can completely write a remap in about 5 or 6 hours ... Let's see .... Six hours for a first class programmer at $125.00 an hours = $725.00 developement. Fifty bucks for a chip burner and a hundred bucks for a proper iron. I count $875.00 in costs. Is it appropiate for a company to markup their product so much that the first sale almost pays for the total developement? Is this a reputable company that would do that? Even if they spent triple that, it's still an example of trying to cheat the consumer. For fifty bucks it would be a fair deal, at $650.00+ it's just a ripoff. Some companies talk about how hard it is to do surface soldering and that's another reason they charge so much. Baloney .... Surface soldering is not all that hard if you have a little experience with an iron and a wee bit o' patience. I do it all the time. Do chips really provide a difference? Yes, I would have to say it does help, ... a little.... But one more time .... $650.00+ ..... are they nuts????? or do they expect us to be that gullible?
