| Message: | The time has come to sell my 533i. The car has a significant number of “performance” parts and I fully realize that it is probably worth much more in parts than it is intact. However, I don’t really like the idea of parting out a salvageable car, so I’ve decided to offer the car as a whole at a slightly discounted price in case any one is interested in it. (Plus it will save me the labor of parting it out.) The car has been a little neglected and it will take considerable work to get the car in good shape. However, it has a lot of potential and may be a perfect project for someone, or a great parts car for someone wanting upgrades. If no one is interested in it intact, I’m going to start pulling parts and putting them on ebay in about a week. I’ve only put about 40k miles on this car over the past ~7 years, and most of the parts I put on have less than ~10k miles on them. Here’s some details: 1983 533i ~185,000 miles Car is located in St. Louis, MO Alpine white on pacific blue comfort leather Paint decent but not great, several door dings Interior fairly worn, cracked dash, ripped seat bolsters Stock 181 HP The good: Lots of upgraded parts. See list at end. Newish Bosal exhaust Replaced rear main seal It’s a blast to drive No annoying and weighty ABS 3000 mile oil changes (Valvoline 10w30) Redline fluids in trans and diff. Head is beautifully clean under the valve cover Car passed MO emissions without problems ~3 years ago (not tested since) Replaced transmission seals Replaced shifter components Replaced subframe bushings less than 500 miles ago Car turns more heads than my e36 M3 Service records back to the early 1990’s Car made 1500+ mile trip to 5er fest in 2003 without problems Lighter than a 535i The bad: One rear sway bar mount ripped off, so rear sway bar was removed Profile (duck) gasket leaks Electrical ground problem (I think) which causes the temp gauge to think the engine is overheating when car is stationary (turning off key “resets” temp gauge), fine when restarted, also causes lurching hesitation on hard acceleration (shouldn’t be a tough fix) Rust under rear bumper and around rear bumper mounts At least one (maybe more) of the wheels is slightly bent. This isn’t noticeable unless you have the tires underinflated and are driving at highway speeds. Quarter sized “starburst” chip in windshield (been there for 3+ years, not spreading) Right front blinker has an intermittent bad connection. May need to pull bumper to fix. Makes safety inspection a pain. AC hasn’t worked since I bought it. Never looked into it. Battery drains after a week or so of not driving it. Alarm system was disconnected for diagnostic work and not reconnected Airdam is cracked in the usual place, and was previously repaired (so it is pretty rigid, just has a crack) Needs control arm bushings One of the large headlight lenses is cracked The price: After looking at ebay prices and tabulating what the upgrades alone are “worth,” I’m asking $3500 for the car as a whole. I realize this seems high, but this is based on the value of the upgrades and even neglects the value of the engine, interior components and body (whatever they’re worth). Not that it has any relevance to the price, but I’ve spent about $10k on the car (parts/labor/maintenance) since I’ve owned it. If anyone wants to seriously talk about this, drop me an email at awilding(at)sbcglobal(dot)net. I don’t really want to give out my cell phone number on here, but I’m willing to talk and I’ll answer any questions you may have; just shoot me an email. I have some old pics of it as well, or I could take some new ones if anyone is interested.
