Nikasil gets it's name from nickel, karbide (german spelling) and silicon. Here's a link explaining Nikasil in general:

IIRC, Porsche and several motorcycle engines utilize Nikasil without undue problems. I think the BMW problem originated with Mahle-casted blocks. Supposedly they reduced the plating thickness to improve production rates of the V-8 blocks. Big mistake. BMW since went with an Alusil 4.4 liter block as a replacement with no problems since.
