I think that Jaguar, XK8 in particular, is designed for good handling in the sense that it lets you "feel" the road. As a side-effect, if there is something wrong in the handling system including wheels and tires, you feel it too.
My XK8 does not have any vibration before I upgrade their wheels from 17" to 18". For me, the problem was not the after-market wheels or the new tires. It was due the wheel balancing equipment which is not advanced enough to balance a wheel for a handling sensitive car such as Jaguar. Fortunately, I've run across an append in Jags-Lovers forum that says "not all equipments are created equal" and suggests to have our wheels balanced on Hunter GSP9700 machine. My car does not vibrate any more after rebalancing. You can locate a shop having such equipment using the url www.gsp9700.com .98 XK8 Conv.
Has anyone come up with a definitive answer to the wheel shimmy problem. This is the only issue with the XK8/XKR that bothers me. The dealer states it is a tire issue but I'm not so sure I believe them. I want to buy a XKR but don't want to be annoyed by the steering wheel bouncing around slightly at 70 MPH. What are everyone's experiences?
