Best case scenario, it comes adrift during idle and the driver shuts the engine off immediately, worst case, 80 mph, it wedges between the chain and sprocket...the front of the engine has to come off for timing chain replacements etc etc...approximately $3000,00 worth of work...
Solution, buy two new Timing chain tensioners (latest revision) and install them...
It's hard to re-time everything as the V8 engine has variable timing...hydraulically controled, so it's really a professional Job....
Hope this helps...
Peter.
I have been hearing about alot of these V8 cars with timing chain problems. What exactly is the trouble? Are the tensioners defective? The reason I am asking is, I have a 1998 XJ8 that was in a front end collision and the timing chain cover is broken. While I have the cover off, is their anything I should change or inspect as a preventative measure? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Byron
