255/50/17 should not rub; technically, they are the same rolling diameter as 255/35/20, which many people have assured me fit perfectly on a stock Xk.

As for width, since tire width is measured bulge, tires of the same width with taller sidewalls have a narrower footprint. This means that the width doesn't carry out to the out diameter of the tire as much on a higher aspect ratio tire... so, the 50's footprint will actually be narrower than the 35's.

You should have no problem with rubbing due to height nor width.
