I too read about these problems. It appears to be the high sulfur content in gasoline in many parts of the US. Not a problem in California, where I am, but it is in many other states. Since my car spent some of its life in Texas (some areas have high sulfur content), I am still not sure about whether I will have problems down the road. Therefore, I am considering an extended warranty (any ideas on this for a '97 with 53K miles would be appreciated).

You might want to check out the sulfur content in your gasoline, then decide if it is an issue.

Rick,
Yes, Nikosil was a major problem with BMW's this side of the Pond, it just doesn't work with our Gasoline I guess...

I've never heard of a problem with the Jaguar V8 Engine, only the timing chain tensioner failures in earlier models, I guess this has been sorted out now with Jaguars' 9th revision of this item...

Cheers
Peter

Does anyone know of a site or literature that addresses the Nikosil engine issue. Reports on this forum and elsewhere point to high failure rate of XK8 engines similar to the problem BMW had with its 1993-1995 V8s; BMW ended up replacing 1000s of motors. Considering the cost of a used XK8, info on the Nikosil issue would be helpful to prospective owners as well as current owners who may be facing engine replacement as their cars approach 80k miles. Thanks for any input.
