as often. You may want ti change for your own piece of mind, but the oil does not break down as fast, is less suceptible to contaminants, and the oil filter is probably the thing in most need of changing, not the oil. BMW recommends changing once a year, regardless of mileage, and their maintenance light comes on after 12 - 15K miles if you drive that much in a year.

I remember reading in the Jag magazine in 1998 Jags response to a question by an owner about the long oil change recommendations on such a high performance car as the Xk8. Jag said they had done extensive testing, and changing the oil more frequently than specified was unnecessary for normal driving, and would not significantly lengthen engine life.

They have everything to lose if this is not correct. Why wouldn't they say to change the oil every 2K miles? Their dealers would be happier with the incresed service needs and costs, and the lower long term reliability would be more assured. Trust them and BMW. I think they know best. If it gives you piece of mind, change it every 1K miles if you want, but it probably is a waste of money.
