Most recommended service intervals are rather long these days - 7,500 miles is very common. That is okay if you drive 7,500 miles on the highway under ideal conditions. But most of us have a fair bit of stop and go driving and in less than ideal conditions. I use conventional oil and have had cars going strong at close to 300,000 miles. Oil changes are cheap insurance.
My 2001 XK8 had it's 10,000 mile service and I am a bit puzzled as to why the oil change schedule is so long. Typically 3000 miles for most cars. A friend of mine who is a GM service mgr made some crack about jag not wanting those cars to last... For peace of mind I would like a more frequent oil change, maybe this is unreasonable? (I drive 7miles each way to work stop and start + fwy).Hedley
