Besides being able to use enclosure speakers, the trunk does have another major benefit (at least according to my friends who are really into this stuff). The trunk, itself, is a secondary enclosure. My buddies dumbed it down for me: the speaker's enclosure give it "tighness" while the trunk-enclosure gives it boom.

Personnally, I thought my speakers have more "Boom" in the open cabin of my truck than they did in the trunk of my 850i, but whatever.

Either way, I doubt you will get a really nice sounding system off of open-airs... assuming you are looking to match your truck's SQ system.
