I'm looking into purchasing an XK8, but after I read that the cylinders are coated with Nikasil, I became very concerned. I'm a BMW owner, and for those of you who don't know, in the early 90's BMW started coating thier 8 cylinder engines with Nikasil. After a few years BMW noticed that these engines had extremely high failure rates which they finally traced to an interaction with the Nikasil and the sulfer content of gas in North America. BMW ended up replacing tons of engines and extending the warranty to cover their behinds. Needless to say, they don't use Nikasil anymore. My fear is that the XK8 engine will suffer the same fate. Does anyone know if this the case, or have the Jaguar designers found a way around the problem. I would really like to own an XK8, but not if the engine is going to need replacing every 50k miles.
