Don't drive it, have it taken to a dealer. The strange shifting is probably the "safe mode". When my XK8 overheated suddenly about 18 months ago, it started shifting oddly too. The dealer said my car had gone into this "safe mode" in order to protect the engine and the Jag roadside assistance folks sent a flat-bed to have my car hauled in to the dealer. The problem with my car was a stuck thermostat, which in turn took out the water pump. My dealer told me this was a somewhat common problem.

out of the blue my xk8 went in to the red and the warning light came on. at the same time, it began shifting strangely. any experience/advice?
