Hi Josh -

I have a '97 w/ 50k miles, and recently had to get the front bushings replaced on both sides. The symptom was a humming sound and a vibration that came through the steering wheel that was dependent on the speed driven (it became quite bad at around 70 MPH, but was noticeable at speeds over about 35 MPH). On the drivers side, the grinding became a squeal even at lower speeds.

If it is the front bearings and you let it go too long, there can be serious damage to other parts (pieces of metal and ball bearings begin to fly into other parts). This can begin happening with as little as a few hundred miles after the bearing housing breaks apart (it's a sealed unit housing the bearings).

I have what I believe is a reputable dealer. They were able to fix them for around $240/side (out the door for $500). The bushings themselves are cheap (around $70), but it requires about 1.5 hours of labor per side.

Good luck and Happy New Year! (Please let us know what the eventual solution is!).

Looking to get some feedback from the board with the issues I am having with my '97 Coupe with 60K miles.

Recently I began to get a serious noise and vibration through the steering wheel, coming from the front end when I drove at 50MPH and higher. Seemed that when I would move the wheel left or right it would go away. Took it to the dealer and they told me that the bushings were cracking. I didn't fix it at that point because of a lack of time. I continued driving it and now I have a very large noise as if the bushing have cracked all the way and are flopping around. I am going to take it to the dealer and have them replace the bushings. I just don't want to spend the money and find out it was the shocks or another problem.

Another note is that when I turn around a sharp curve at low speeds I get a humming noise.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh Mann
