The XK8 is a car - a mechanical beast (as are all cars). They are designed and manufactured by people and machines that are not perfect (as are all cars). I've yet to own a single car that didn't have at least some problems (that includes Ford, Pontiac, Porsche, Honda, BMW, and now Jaguar). There are probably cars more "reliable" than the XK8 (if reliable means nothing ever goes wrong). But, I've found these types of cars to be boring to drive. I'd rather have fun and a few problems, than boring and no problems.
On my '97 XK8 I've had several little problems:
1) Wheel bearings went out in the front
2) Had to get a break job to eliminate squeal
3) Visor mirror cover won't stay shut
4) Passenger seat leather clips came loose
5) Driver heated seat sometimes won't come on (loose connection).
I've also had a lot of fun.
I've got 50,000 miles on it, and I consider these problems minor (more annoying than anything).
It all comes down to what you want. If you want a comfortable, high performance, quiet convertible that has class and style, then the XK8 is very competitive (especially at used '97 prices).
No car is perfect. The XK8 has it's warts just like any other car. You just have to decide if it has a mix that works for you. I consider my XK8 to be a wonderful car with average reliability (compared to other makes and models).
Sorry for the long post.
