I have often greatly preferred enclosure subs against open-air subs. I think you will find that when the enclosure is specifically designed to the speaker manufacturer's specs, the sound is much tighter and accurate. I mostly listen to classical and jazz, but also like electronica, trance, some tehcno/jungle, and hip hop; so I expect my stereo to do a lot of different things. An enclosed sub is the only way to get the string bass to sound like a string bass while being plucked with Ella F., and still be able to hit hard with the Ruff Riders's tracks.

Also, an amp is only as good as the source that the head unit sends it. You don't want to amplify back source. When building my systems, I have always started from the source and worked my way back.

You will need a crossover.
