In my opinion, the XK8 is a more "sexy" car than the X-Type. The X-Type is more practical, however.

If you need to carry people in the back seat often, the X-Type will be better for you. If you will mainly be driving alone or with one passenger, and you don't mind the possibility of some maintenance on the XK8, get it. Just make sure that it has all the service records. If you trust your closest Jaguar dealer, you will enjoy either car.

The X-Type is certainly a fun car, and the fact that you can get it with a stick shift is a benefit over the XK8 which only comes in an automatic, but...the X-Type feels like exactly what it is--a small 4-door sedan. The XK8 feels larger, heavier, more luxurious, but isn't as practical.
