...speakers and amplifier while sticking with the factory head unit. That way, you will retain the steering wheel controls while getting better sound. Typically, OEM systems have ok tuners, but not-so-great amplifier and speakers.

Find a good aftermarket stereo shop in your area (i.e. one you don't mind taking apart and putting back together parts of your car) and decide how much you want to spend. Are you after more bass, all-around better sound, or what?

I personally recommend a/d/s/ components. You could start by having your front speakers replaced with a/d/s/ speakers and adding a subwoofer in the trunk--perhaps ported through the rear shelf behind the rear seats. You'd have the factory head unit hooked up to an a/d/s/ amplifier which would be powering the front speakers and the sub. The rear speakers you could leave powered by the stock head unit. The rears are really just there for "fill". The fronts are what is important for sound, and the sub will get you that extra bass which smaller speakers really aren't designed to provide.
