Mike,
I am the second owner of my '98 XK8. I got it with about 18K miles on it. While I did not experience precisely the same problems as you, I did have a few occasions where the top did not open or close correctly. The motor mechanism was very noisy - but having nothing to compare it with, I did not realize that it was too noisy. A call to the nearest Jag dealer cleared it up. (I did not buy the car at this dealer, I got it a Mercedes dealership.) The dealer, Penske Jaguar of West Covina, CA, told me that a hydraulic pump powers top, and there was probably a problem with the hydraulic fluid used in the system. While he did not out right say it, I was left with the impression that this is a common problem of that year car. The top was worked on at the 20K service (under warrantee) and the problem resolved. It is also much, much quieter.
Good Luck,
Mike W.
