First, he might want to consider having the windows tinted. I did in my XK8 and it really helps with that expanse of rear glass. I think that would help a lot with possible sun damage to the leather if the car is going to sit in the sun a lot.

Second, the cheap route is to go by Walmart and get one of those reflective accordion-folding sun hades--it will work in the back as well as the front. If it doesn't want to stay in position in the back, a little bit of velcro could probably be used to hold the top edge of it to the headliner at the rear of the car.

My answers are for an XK8 coupe--if your father has an XK8 convertible, I wouldn't think the rear window is large enough to worry about.
