I had looked up the numbers (BMW USA site ) on the 740 a couple of weeks again and was very UN-impressed in term of acceleration, hp. etc... Speedlimiter is set at 120 or 125 mph ! Frankly, I think the XJR is a far better choice, price is roughly the same, I am willing to give up a bit of interoir volume for the performance and the styling !
The supercharged XJR is a blast to drive because of the power, few cars can keep up with it, the M5 is indeed the only one, and it's just a bit faster 0-60 probably because of the manual box. There is an M5 parked next to me in my building, it's a good looking car, not as sleek looking as a Jaguar of course but attractive.
The only difference in performance and handling between the XKR and XJR is that the XJR feels a bit heavier in steering but that's about it. Haven't driven it yet on winding country roads ( not much of these in South Florida) but the grip and handling on long curves is very close as the XKR, the suspension is perfect. Firm but not harsh.
Alan is almost right on the rear seat of the coupe, you won't fit an adult there unless he really needs to... my son is 11, he fits... but for no more than a couple of hours and that's with the passenger seat moved up a bit, halfway up. Went to Orlando a few weeks ago, with my wife, him and our 6 yo daughter, it worked, but a bit tight... Next time we'll have to take my wife's XJR
