XK8 service visit report (archive)

At my 30k service (done about 3000 miles early), the technician at the dealership accidentally broke some breather hose on the engine. A replacement wasn't in stock, so I was sent on my way with a promise to get a new hose in as soon as possible. Unfortunately I live 3.5 hours away from the dealership so it is a weekend affair to take the car in for a service visit for any warranty issues. While the hose was broken, I was left with a check engine light on, an annoying whistling sound from the engine, and an occasional "restricted performance" message from the car's computer accompanied by lurching as the computer cut the throttle attempting to keep emission status kosher.

I finally had a chance to take the car in to have this fixed this past weekend. The next day, as I was backing out of the spot in which I had parked at the place I stayed the night, I noticed a large puddle of oil under the car. After some checking, it appeared that the oil filter was loose. I believe that what happened was that they did an unscheduled oil and filter change at the same time they replaced the hose (since they had to take the top of the engine off to replace the hose...not just the plastic cover, but the actual top of the engine...) and then didn't fully tighten the filter.

I am glad I noticed the puddle of oil before driving 3 and a half hours with the oil draining from my engine.

So far I have been enjoying the XK8 immensely, but have found the dealer service to be less than stellar. They are always very courteous and do take care of everything, but they never seem to have parts in stock to fix warranty items like the broken hose. Even at this latest visit, I reported a problem with the automatic steering wheel positioning. It turns out it needs a new motor, but of course one is not in stock and they have to order it, leaving me to waste another weekend a few weeks from now to take the car up to have it fixed.

Just venting a bit...
