Carmen,
Jaguar are now on their 9th Timing Chain tensioner upgrade, this is a common problem on earlier higher mileage V8 engines.
What normally happens is that the tensioner (normaly on the drivers side US) has a fiber pad which comes adrift and gets caught between the Timing Chain and sprocket, if you're lucky enough to catch it immediately you will beable to shut the engine off and avoid any further damage..if not, the chain will hit against the casing, the worst case scenario is that this part will fall down into the main timing chain chamber and cause all kinds of damage, we've seen this happen..normally the front of the engine needs to come off and all the damage repaired ($3000), normally, a Cam chain tensioner upgrade, to the latest upgrade will cost around $700.00, but well worth it...So, if anyone has a 97/98 XK8 it makes sense to have your Cam Chain tensioners replaced, or risk some serious damage...
Sorry to hear what happened to your XK8 Carmen, it's quite common.
Cheers
Peter
Recently took my 97 XK8 to Jag dealer and was told that my car was flooding. After two days I was informed that my timing chain was broken, valve was sucked and engine needed replacement for $10,000. Car had 64k miles, was service properly and just out of warranty. Jag said too bad! Any other timing chain or similar stories with ttheir XK8 or with dealer.
