I think Ian is correct. My car was built in December and had the drive shaft noise. Given all the posts regarding the early drive shaft replacements, I waited a while before asking the dealer to attempt to fix it. I brough the car in for a 5k service in May and mentioned the noise to the dealer. They installed a new drive shaft. According to the dealer, the drive shaft they put in was the 3rd generation redesign. As far as the noise is concerned, so far, so good. It hasn't been really cold, so I can't say for certain if the problem is really fixed, but I definately notice a big improvement. There is still a faint whinning at about 65mph, but its not loud enough to be bothersome. By the way, I drove my partner's new '02 BMW M5 back to the office from the Westchester Airport last week (all highway), and I noticed that that car also has a driveshaft noise, definately louder than what I now have in my X-Type (This is not to knock the M5 . . . it is truly an awesome car, definately the most powerful car I have ever driven).Unless you can get a really good deal on an '02, I would suggest that you waite for the '03s . . . as the newer vintage will likely have factory corrections for most of the problems that afflicted the '02s.
