I think the 3 Rivs explains it. Besides far softer springs there are serious differences in rigidity and overhang. The X type is probably 200% more rigid than the Riv. The flexability appears to filter out bumps as does the front and rear overhang beyond the wheels. What is actualy happening is the bumps appear smaller but are repeated, which gives the sensation of wallowing over bumps. Due to the greater rigidity and the reduction of ovehangs engineers can snub the bump almost immediately without the wallowing and continued vibration. This snubbing along with the greater road feel through the wheel and the seat may make it appear harsher, but I believe if you placed a meter in the car the Jag would be transmitting far less energy into the cabin, when going over bumps, than the Riv.
In any case, lowering the tire pressures a bit or changing to narrower tires with more sidewall flex will bring you a bit closer to the ride you want, but either method will reduce the safety margin of the handling and braking. I think you would have been far happier by spending the same money on a used XJ Jag with the extended warranty. Perhaps your delaer will still be willing to take care of you by allowing a trade of the x for the XJ without much of a loss to you. The XJ makes a Riv seem rough, although it is absolutely not my type of ride.
I run at 33 lbs on all tires. My previous 3 vehicles were Buick Rivieras.

Thanks for your responses.

I absolutely don't feel every bump with mine. What car did you have prior to the X that you find smoother? Meanwhile, as other poster suggested check tire pressure is set for about 30lbs. Some cars such as Mercede were imported many years ago with some sort of stops installed on the springs for transport. perhaps Jag is doing the same. But anyway a check of tire pressure and letting us know what car you had that you found smoother would let us know if it is a problem with your particular car.

Fair question! I have a 3.0 Non-sport version. I feel every bump - constantly. I understand most people probably enjoy the "feel of the road" and the the tight handling, but I am wondering if it is possible to create a "quieter feeling" ride. I'd appreciate any reasonable suggestions. Thanks again.
