I guess I.Q. has very little to do with car ownership.

I agee with you. There are several reasons why that is though. There have been cars that could keep up with the 3 series and now surpass by some of the Japanese models. A few years ago their main competition was with Acura, Lexus and Audi. Good cars but lack the prestige and panache of a BMW till now. When you think of Luxury, you think of Mercede and Jaguar. When you think of elegance in design, Jaguar is in a class by itself.
BMW USED to be the best in almost every categories a few years ago. Now the fastest is a Acura or Infiniti with the TLS and G35. The most reliable and affordable are the Japanese also along with the Audi. The most luxurious might be the Mercede and Jaguar. The best looking in the class belong to the Jaguar x-type. THE BMW IS NOT BEST IN ANY CATEGORY EXCEPT MAYBE HANDLING, but nobody could see handling. And handling will not win you pink slip either.
So you see, no one is giving the a second look on the street, can't win any races, and people could careless if they drive a BMW these days. I'd be mad as hell too, if i thought i bought the best car for a price, and it turn out to be not the case.
