The pieces are about 2-5mm thick and look identical to the other wood pieces in the car.

I'm not sure if there's a thin laminate of wood in there or if it's just a high-tech decal made to look like wood.

But to me, I can't tell the difference between the factory "wood" and the added "wood" after they're applied.

It's about 6 layers of thin wood, the inner is some sort of hard plastic. Practically none of the woodparts made today in any car are of 100% wood. (due to expanding, cracks, etc).

During my visit to the jaguar factory I was impressed by the ammount of handwork that is put into the wood and leather parts.
