Sam,

The notch is so the moulding will clear the front door if you open the rear door while the front door is closed. Many cars with side mouldings don't have the notch, which, is a much cleaner look.

I was staring at my car last night (which I do often), trying to figure out the purpose of the notch cut out of the front of the side molding of the rear doors. It looks like a reflector or something was supposed to go there. Any ideas?
