I have one friend who's on his second S-Type and he's 21. For me, it just looks awkward seeing him drive around in it ...no offense to the more "mature" on here, but the S-Type just seems more appropriate to the 40+ croud and looks downright awkward to see him in it. When I told my friends I was getting a Jaguar, I got the same look/talk from friends --"why are you getting an old man's car." But when I picked up the X-Type, their mindset changed...as I'm sure your son's peers will too. I think the X-Type is probably the only car in the Jaguar family that's suitable for the under 25 crowd.
I have friends who have the new Boxter-S too, but they say when they tire of it, they'll move into the Jaguar series too... either the X-Type or they'll wait for the X-Type R due out in '03 for the '04 model year. Some are also migrating from the Boxter to the Jaguar XKR Convertible, which may also be an option in place of either the X or the Boxter. To me, both the Boxter and XKR are "midlife crisis" cars (again, apologies to those longer in the tooth), so I'd stay away from them (for at least another 20-30 years.)
Out of curiosity, why narrow down your choice to the Boxter and Jaguar? Some other pals of mine chose the SUV route --like the new BMW X5 (about $25k more than the Jaguar X) and the Cadillac Escalade EXT, which is just a few more thousand than a loaded X-Type.
Personally, I love my X-Type and drive it more than my other car... but an SUV may be more "fitting" for someone in their teens based on today's trends.
My only child, a son, is graduating from high school this June and I would like to suprise him with another car this time a Jaguar X-type but I would like to know if you think a 17 year old would look appropriate in a Jaguar.
