When I was groing up and wanted a car, my father said you want it, you pay for it, the gas, insurance and maintenance. As a result I got a job so that I could afford the car and learned auto mechanics to fix anything that went wrong. ( couldn't afford both gas and repairs.) My friends and I did motors, clutches, brakes, etc, in addition to tuneups and oil changes.

This was an invaluable lesson in self sufficiency for which I occasionally thank my father for. Of course I would have loved to have been given a JAguar or a Porsche, but what does that teach your child? That you have money? If you want to get your kid a nice, safe, reliable and fun car, how about a Mazda MP3 or a Subaru wrx and put the rest of the money into his college fund?

I currently drive an S type and I have had a few problems with it but nothing major. My only child, a son, is graduating from high school this June and I would like to suprise him with another car this time a Jaguar X-type but I would like to know if you think a 17 year old would look appropriate in a Jaguar. My wife and I have been looking at cars and we're hooked on the x-type or a boxster.
