My last car had a single in dash cd player and a cassette player as well. It was a real hassle to change cd's while driving, so for my x-type i got the in changer with the main unit being a cassette player. I agree that neither option is the best solution. It seems that the best of all worlds would have been if Jaguar had an in dash cd changer along with a cassette player.
By the way, there are still some advantages to cassettes, primarily longer playing time, smaller footprint and more robust media (IMO), especially if you make compilation recordings. I found that cd-recordings limit you to about 65-70 minutes, verses 90 minutes for a cassette. Also it took several attempts at different brands of cdr's to find media that didn't skip when the car went over a bump (Sony cdr audio).
My resolution was to buy additional 6cd cartridges for the cd changer (alpine brand, 2 for $24.99 at Circuit City in NY), fill them with copied cd's and leave them in the trunk, and a filled cassette bag in the car. I say all we unfortunates that got stuck with the cassette player start a campaign to convince Jaguar to upgrade to the in-dash CD at a reasonable price.
Considering that the earliest X-Type buyers didn't even get the $2100 incentive and that the in-dash CD is apparently standard issue on the 2003 X's....
If a hundred or so of us demand that Jaguar come through in the spirit of good-will with an upgrade in the $200 range, just maybe they'll do it.
(and they can keep the original cassette in trade!!!)
I'm sending my letter off this very weekend.
