Well, I am assuming that you are not wasteful to begin with. Obviously you can find extra budget by trimming waste. Efforts to reduce manufacturing and dev costs are a separate issue from what I am talking about.
From a purely technical point of view, I doubt there is much if any production cost difference between engines of different displacements built on the same block. Manufacturers often increase HP between model years without changing displacement
Not on a first year model. Go back and read my F-type example. Sure, after a few years of production, after you have recouped your development costs and sales begin to wane, it makes sense to spend more to make upgrades. That's not the case with the X. And little cost per car adds up. $400/car x 100,000 cars = $40 million that you want Jaguar to give to us. I wonder why they didn't do it?
BMW has the largest market share in this segment so there is more to steal there than anyplace else - and I'm quite sure Jaguar management wants a piece of it.
Astonishingly, you still miss the point. Why doesn't Jaguar make trucks? Not only is that a huge piece of pie, but the profit per unit is also high. Don't you think "Jaguar management" would want a piece of that? I'll tell you why Jaguar does not make trucks: Jaguar management is interested in making Jaguars. Trucks are not Jaguars the same as BMWs are not Jaguars. They understand what eludes you: Jaguar buyers want to buy Jaguars.
