Allow me to preface this with the fact that I learned to drive on my fathers MKII. So far I haven't found another Jag I would be interested in. You are correct about the headroom - sunroof problem which I have found in every Jag. I guess they are only interested in selling these cars to the woman of average height, not to men.
Their reputation for poor reliability is well deserved, ask anyone who has had the AC collected water dumpd on them while riding in the passenger seat.
The X type is the first Jag that has a chance to be reliable, fast enough, and posses excellent handling. But the question regarding the packages is extremely valid. The headroom chopping sunroof, the grey wood that appears more like plastic than Hyundai fake wood, the Conti tires, the lack of detail on the front seat backs. I'll be looking into the X without the automatic, sport pack and sunroof pack for the reasons already listed. I get a car to DRIVE not pose in, although I understand that Jaguar decided to go after the posers market years ago. Maybe the X will bring them back to their roots of making fast and fluid cars, while getting rid of their poor reliability roots.
First off let me say that I was truly ready to purchase an X-type after hearing a good deal of positive experiences with them. Unfortunatly I will not buy one because of a lack of flexibility when it comes to the horrible option packages. I had it all planned out, I would buy either a 2.5 or 3.0 manual Sport. Im not sure how it is in other parts of the world, but here in the United States, the Sport package requires the Premium package, which has a sunroof, which you cannot have a delete option on. You have to get the sunroof if you want a Sport X-Type. That damn sunroof takes up enough headroom that my head just dosen't really have the room it needs to feel comfortable. It also adds a good deal of weight to the highest point of the car. On top of that, ironically, the Sport Seats do not fit "Sport bodies" like mine and feel way to restrictive. But like the sunroof, I cannot get the standard seats with the Sport package. I AM VERY DISSAPOINTED THAT JAGUAR CANNOT BE FLEXIBLE WITH SOME OF THE OPTIONS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO DRIVER FIT AND COMFORT. I will now be forced to buy either an Audi or BMW, which were not first choices, BUT AT LEAST I'LL FIT!
