Cars with identical performance numbers can feel totally different, so are the numbers as important as the "feel"? What does "leading its class" really mean? Doesn't it make more sense to choose a car because it better suits your preferences? We tend to value the judgement of automotive reviewers more than we value our own. In my mind, "best in class" is an individual choice. For example, someone who wants a high performance car to use as a daily driver and commutes on a crowded freeway, might choose an E55 for its automatic transmission over an M5. But someone who travels to work on an open freeway, or twisty country roads, might choose the M5. Rarely, if ever, do any of us use the full potential of our cars, so isn't "how they feel" more important than a few tenths of a second on a reviewer's road test summary?Mike

i mention the r becuase you said the xjr leads its class. notice the xj8 doesn't? the x-type will probably follow the same pattern.
However, there is no separate class of high performance large luxury sedans (i.e. no BMW M7, no Mercedes S-class with an AMG badge, etc...), so the XJR gets lumped in with the rest of the large luxury sedans, and leads that class in acceleration. It is actually cheaper than its competition as well as faster:) If I could get an X-Type R for the price of a 330i, I'd have no gripes (except that grey wood, of course).
there may be no M7, but there certainly is an AMG S55 (and although a coupe, a CL55). The XJ8 doesn't beat the S600 (or S500) in performance, or the BMW 7-series. The XJR beats the S600 and S55. As I said the X-Type R will compete with the AMG and M, the X-Type 3.0 fits nicely in between.
