I was shopping the exact same two cars. I chose the x-type and here why. I'm in my late twenties so getting marry and starting family is in the near future so a four door sedan is much more ideal. The awd is definately a plus here in Chicagoland too. The 325i and 325xi on the other hand just doesn't look quite right due to the proportion(too short to have four doors IMO). I had a side by side comparsion, since this particular Jag dealer sell BMW also, and they had a 2002 325ci in the next row ten feet away. My first impression was that the jag looks better, the paint job more eye catching, the interior warmer. The price of the car is about the same with similar options, but you should already know that. Both cars drove and handle great as expected. The awd would have gave the Jag a definate advantage but, no snow here in Chicagoland in the middle of December go figure. These two car though in the same class, have different personalities. The Jag is a luxury-sport car where luxury comes first, while a BMW is a sport-luxury car with the emphasis on sport. Your lifestyle might be totally different, so test drive both car and then decide what is more important to you. If you are one of those who like to race everyone at every stop lights, then buy the BMW or better yet buy a Corvette. Then come back in about five years and get the x-type.
