I have not been momitoring the E46 board for about 4 months now, so I cannot disagree with you about the Xi's current reliability, but I suspect it's pretty good. But there are changes made during the model run that can cause problems, such as the auxillary fans on all manual transmission BMW's, including the Xi. Remember there were multiple recalls and many owners were pretty ticked off for having those fans replaced, only to have the same overheating problem recur once or twice. A couple even caught fire. BMW did not really handle that problem well. It may be more likely that glitches show up in the first model year, but they can happen at any time.

I think we can all agree that by reading the 7 series or the x-type boards that these two first year models are having a lot of problems. The 330xi, however, is not in its first year, and has not had any issues whatsoever.
