I didn't get the premium (didn't need the CD) and I think the standard sound has a distinct lack of depth and separation.

If you have a discriminating ear, I would probably do the premium.

Oh, yeah... Can someone that does have the premium soudn system tell me where all the speakers are? I figure, like the basic, there is one in each door (and the placement in the passenger's door is really bad, BTW), and if I stick my head in the trunk and look up, I can see where two more go. But where do the rest live?

There is a tweeter and woofer in each of the 4 doors. The speaker grills are quite visible in all doors with premium sound. Then of course there are the two sub-woofers in the trunk. In addition to the ten speakers premium sound comes with a more powerful amplifier. The difference in sound is quite substantial and the power of the bass can be felt.
