Thanks for the info. I think your description of the noise fits my case. I will contact the dealer and let them know.

I also have the high speed whinning noise in my 2.5 manual (which is separate and distinct from the intermittent "wine-glass" noise discussed in numerous previous posts). The whine comes in an out at different speeds, but is most noticeable and constant above 70 MPH. My dealer used a series of microphones attached to the underside of the car at various locations to isolate the noise. I don't know if all of the dealers have this tool, but they should. Anyway, they are convinced the whine is coming from the rear differential. They also say that they compared my car with another car and found that the noise is not normal. They contacted Jag Regional (New England) and obtained approval to replace the differential, and the new unit is now on order. Oddly, Jag Regional told my service rep that they had only one other reported problem with the rear differential in New England. I will post the rusults once the new differential is installed.

Also, I disagree with your dealer's statement that "every" X-Type does this. The car I test drove on the highway before I bought my car certainly did not do it. You should report the problem (and your dealer's response)directly to Jag corporate.
