I didn't come up with this comparison, just wanted to answer it with the best information I had. I agree that comparing an X-type 3.0 with a 330xi may be a more appropriate (both cost about the same), but you will be even more suprised by the result.

In Oct 2001 Car and Driver tested the 330xi and got a 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds (faster than any 3 series except the M3). Why is it the fastest you ask? AWD gives it 4 wheels of grip for acceleration.

I was quoting C&D's "most recent" 0-60 times for the X-type 3.0 (7.2 seconds). Yes, there was an earlier test of the X-type with faster results,
so maybe the times should be averaged.

Make no mistake, however. I don't suggest that 0-60 times are the main criteria when it comes to buying a car. Otherwise we would all be driving Ford Mustangs...
