Hello MikeP,

I came here to read about X-type because I was considering the lease special they got going on for my wife, but now I'm having second thoughts after reading just your post alone...

Anyways, I have a '98 BMW 528i, and I had a faint humming noise similar to what you're describing coming from the engine bay whenever the engine was cold. It would last for a few minutes until the engine warmed up to normal operating temp range. Then I had the fan belt replaced, and the humming noise went away. I had my doubts about the cause being the fan belt that was wearing out, but one mechanic told me that it may have been the fan belt, or it could have been the fan clutch in which case it was adjusted during the belt replacement procedure. Maybe your problem is related, I don't know. Just a suggestion.

Kelly,

It's hard to tell where the noise is coming from, but if I had to guess, it is coming from the front, possibly where the driveshaft meets the transmission. I have about 1900 miles on the car and I have only heard the noise about 4 times. The noise sounds like a tuning fork or a wet finger rubbing the rim of a wine glass. There is no vibration felt at all, just the noise. The first time it happened, I didn't pay much attention to it. The second time, I thought it was coming from the climate control because I had just turned it on. The last time I heard it, after driving less than 5 minutes, the outside temperature was below 40 degrees and I had just entered the freeway and was accelerating to about 50 mph. The noise started and lasted about 10 seconds. Before the noise stopped, I turned off the climate control and the noise continued. As I approached 60 mph the noise returned, louder and lasted for about 20 seconds. I believe, but I am not totally positive, that similar conditions existed whenever the noise appeared. I don't remember hearing the noise after the car was fully warmed up, when the outside temperature was warmer or when traveling on city streets. Since I can't duplicate the noise at will, I can't demonstrate the problem to my service advisor. If it was just the noise, I could almost live with it since it happens so rarely, but I am concerned that whatever is causing the noise is prematurely wearing. The service manager took my phone number and said he would call me back. That was 2 weeks ago and I haven't heard from him since. An email to Jaguar has gone unanswered for almost a week. I love the car, but the service is driving me nuts.

Mike

Here here Mike!

Mike the noise in the drivetrain, is it coming from the rear, starts at about 30mph and stops around 55? There is a campaign concerning the rear driveshaft and lap seal that calls for replacement of the driveshaft (propshaft) and adding counterweights to the rear diff. Not that it will do you any good, my driveshaft has been on order for over a month! Well said Mike!
