Insider,

I believe you are sincere in your enthusiasm for the X-type and the care in which you and your coworkers manufacture and assemble these cars. However, you have little control over the quality of parts you are given by suppliers and the engineers who design them. There have been many quality issues with the X-Type, most of which have been known by Jaguar for some time. Cars are still being delivered with faulty trunk locks and without check valves in the windshield washer fluid lines. On my car alone, I have had the center armrest replaced, a front suspension control arm replaced, trunk lock replaced that doesn't work any better, the check valve installed and now I'm hearing occasional whining noises from somewhere in the drivetrain.

My service department has been less than sympathic and helpful, especially with this last problem. I have written Jaguar N.A. several emails through their "myjaguar.com" website, asking for help, but have never even received an acknowledgement from them.

The X-Type has the potential to be a first class product for Jaguar. First year glitches are expected, as is a concern by Jaguar for their customers' problems. I have not had the latter, but many of the glitches. Customers will be patient waiting for the solutions to their problems if they understand that Jaguar is attentive to them and is working toward a common goal. This has not been my experience.

I was very free in recommending the X-Type to all those who asked my opinion. Not so anymore. To all those considering the purchase of an X-Type, be very cautious. Make sure your servicing dealer is very customer oriented and ask for names & phone numbers of other Jaguar owners who have their cars serviced there. Read this, and other discussion groups religiously and make note of the common problems that owners are having. Talk to the Service Manager about these potential problems and ask if he is aware of them. If he says "No", run, don't walk away. Problems can be fixed if a network of the right people exist who are interested in diagnosing and solving them. This network, at least in my case, appears not to exist.
